International News New HIV/AIDS Hospital Opens in UkraineMarch 15, 2006 A $3.5 million hospital for HIV/AIDS patients, which was rebuilt by the city government, opened Friday in Kiev. The hospital has the capacity to treat 120 inpatients free of charge. While Ukraine has documented 76,875 HIV cases since 1987, some experts believe that 500,000 people, or 1 percent of the country's population, are infected. "AIDS is not the 20th century black death, as they say, but a problem that should be combated," Deputy Health Minister Valery Ivasuik said at the opening ceremony of the facility, which he said "meets the toughest European standards."
