Australia: Taxpayers Faced With Burden of HIV-Infected Arrivals

New South Wales is paying $2 million Australian ($1.5 million US) annually for the HIV treatment of 170 new refugees to Australia, some of whom were not screened by the commonwealth's Immigration Department, NSW Health Minister John Hatzistergos said recently. Many of the refugees only discovered their infections after entering Australia. The minister said screening is a commonwealth responsibility, the failure of which is costing the NSW public health system.
