International News HIV Infections on Rise in BelgiumMarch 1, 2006 The number of HIV infections in Belgium among both immigrant and native groups rose by 43 percent between 1997 and 2004, the Scientific Institute for Public Health and the College of AIDS Reference Laboratories said Tuesday. An average of three people are diagnosed with HIV each day in Belgium, compared to a rate of two people a day in the 1980s, the institutes said. Sixty-six percent of HIV-positive men in the country were infected though sex with men, while 87 percent of women were infected via heterosexual sex.
