China Releases AIDS Activist

March 28, 2006

Today in Beijing, Chinese state security police dropped off Hu Jia near his home. The noted AIDS activist had been missing since mid-February and was thought to be in the custody of police, who had previously placed him under 24-hour surveillance. Dissidents said they believe Hu was detained for his part in organizing a nationwide hunger strike to protest police brutality against civil rights advocates. Hu's wife, Zeng Jinayn, last week held a press conference to create international awareness of his plight. In addition, UNAIDS had raised Hu's case with China's government.
