AIDS Prisoners Suspend Hunger Strike in South Africa

March 29, 2006

In Durban today, 242 inmates of the Westville prison ended a hunger strike undertaken Monday to protest bureaucratic obstacles to providing drug therapy to HIV-infected prisoners. On Tuesday, the correctional services department launched a task force to address the prisoners' complaint. "They have suspended the strike as of today for two months to see if [officials] will be able to keep their promises," said Sthembiso Mkhize, a spokesperson for the Treatment Action Campaign. Mkhize said corrections officials promised to test prisoners for HIV and provide antiretroviral drugs for those needing them.
