International News Tajikistan Seen at Risk of HIV/AIDS EpidemicMarch 2, 2006 Though it currently has Central Asia's lowest per capita HIV infection rate, Tajikistan could face an AIDS epidemic in two years, the UN and the International Monetary Fund said on Feb. 22. "There is cause for serious concern," the groups said, noting that the number of HIV cases could rise from an estimated 4,000 in 2004 to 10,000 by the end of 2006. HIV is spreading in Tajikistan chiefly through intravenous drug users, prostitutes, and returning migrant workers, said the groups' statement. The country was the first of the former Soviet republics to mobilize major resources to fight AIDS, in part through a $10 million UN grant for 2003-2010.
