United Kingdom: Bono Is Guest Editor of Independent

May 17, 2006

Rock star Bono guest-edited Tuesday's edition of The Independent newspaper, which featured stories on HIV/AIDS in Africa, poverty, and global warming. The front page headline read, "No News Today," with the footnote: "Just 6,500 Africans died today as a result of preventable, treatable diseases (HIV/AIDS)." Bono was invited to edit the Tuesday edition to highlight his Project Red campaign, which enlists companies to donate the proceeds of products made under the Red brand to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. In an editorial, Bono asked readers to support the campaign, which includes corporate sponsors like American Express, Converse, and the Gap. Half the revenue from the sale of Tuesday's edition will go toward aid groups in Africa, the newspaper said.
