Nigeria: President Inaugurates African Center for AIDS Management

May 9, 2006

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has tapped Zambia's former president, Kenneth Kaunda, to head up the newly created African Center for HIV/AIDS Management (ACHAM). "ACHAM is envisioned as a body that sets the tone for the policy environment on human development using AIDS as the entry point," Obasanjo said during the inauguration ceremony Saturday. The center will also provide the needed leadership and direction from the African perspective in combating AIDS, he added. In thanking Kaunda for accepting the position, Obasanjo added that the assignment is a critical one "whose successful prosecution will help to regenerate and reposition our continent for the development challenges of the twenty-first century."
