International News HIV Infections Among Thai Wives Rising: ReportSeptember 11, 2006 The news that married women now comprise the largest group of newly infected HIV patients in Thailand is prompting health authorities to re-examine their prevention strategies, the Bangkok Post reported Saturday. According to the Public Health Ministry, more than 30 percent of the estimated 17,000 new HIV infections in 2005 were married women, while 20 percent were men who have sex with men, and 10 percent were intravenous drug users. The rest were teenagers and the clients of sex workers. Dr. Sombat Tanprasertsuck, director of the AIDS, TB and STD Bureau, said the ministry will distribute up to 5 million condoms to married couples and is encouraging them to undergo regular HIV testing.
