Hawaii: Teen Drug Use Falls, Survey Shows

September 14, 2006

Middle and high school students in Hawaii have the nation's lowest incidence of sexual intercourse, according to the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Among those youths who are sexually active, however, the state had the nation's lowest rate of condom use: Only 47.6 percent of students who reported intercourse said they used condoms. Among those currently sexually active, only 12.7 percent reported using birth control -- again, the nation's lowest percentage. Drinking, smoking and drug use by state teens have all declined since 2003. While 7.7 percent of Hawaii's youths used crystal methamphetamine in 1999, only 4 percent reported doing so in the most recent survey. The number of students surveyed was 3,355.
