September 8, 2006
This Sunday's 10th annual AIDS Walk and Festival will take place at Lawton Park, 1900 S. Clinton St. The 5k walk lasts from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's theme is "The Power of One: The Fight to End HIV/AIDS Begins with You!" In 2005, 11,689 Indiana residents had HIV/AIDS, according to state Department of Health statistics. Since 1982, 4,290 state residents have died of AIDS-related complications. Women and teenagers are the largest population of people being diagnosed with HIV, according to Sue Nation of the Northeast Indiana AIDS Task Force. Nation expects about 500 people to participate in the walk, which has raised more than $500,000 since its inception in 1997.
