Belarus Releases AIDS Statistics

April 10, 2002

The number of Belarusian regions affected by HIV has been increasing every month, said the chief doctor of the Belarusian National Center for AIDS Prevention, Liliya Myaleshka. As of April 1, Myaleshka said, 122 administrative territories were involved in the epidemic, which was 11 more than at the start of the year. At present, 4,213 patients infected with HIV are registered in Belarus. The main category of infected persons is young people ages 15-29. The main reason for infection remains drug injection. At the same time, the number of infections contracted sexually is on the rise.
