New Jersey Teen Tests Positive for TB

April 15, 2002

A 17-year-old student from Cherokee High School has recently tested positive for TB, said Burlington County, N.J., health officials. The student, who became ill several weeks ago, was treated with antibiotics and has returned to school. Eleven students and three staff members at the Marlton school who had close contact with the infected student will be tested for the disease. Health officials said they did not know how the student contracted it. A family member also tested positive for exposure but showed no signs of the disease. There are between 10 and 15 cases of TB in Burlington County each year, said Barbara Gibson, the county public health epidemiologist.
