Houston Mayor Names City Councilmember to Lead AIDS Task Force

April 16, 2002

Houston Mayor Lee Brown has named District D Councilmember Ada Edwards as chairperson of the city's HIV/AIDS Task Force. She will be responsible for gathering community members representing Houston's diverse population and appointing them to serve on the task force. She will also have the authority to convene meetings and initiate steps to handle the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the city. "This appointment provides our office the opportunity to amass as many resources possible -- both financial and manpower -- to fight this tragic epidemic that is currently raging in our community," said Edwards. She said her office will work with community-based organizations, city health officials and other council members "in the fight to eradicate this vicious virus from our community." The task force grew out of Brown's 1999 call for a response to the growing number of cases in the African-American community and his declaration of an HIV/AIDS "state of emergency" in Houston.
