In Brief: Drugs

April 17, 2002

Pfizer will freeze the price of its AIDS drug, Viracept, for the next two years for the federal AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), according to CEO Hank McKinnell. McKinnell made the announcement at the first meeting of the President's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, to which he was appointed in late February. ADAP has waiting lists in 10 states and territories, and has seen its funding threatened on a national level as well. The protease inhibitor is among the best-selling medications in its class, making up more than 35 percent of protease sales in 2000. The current wholesale price for Viracept is $2.02 per tablet. Dosage is five tablets twice a day.
