South Carolina Middle School Finds More Students Exposed to TB

April 1, 2002

Thirteen more students and faculty have tested positive for exposure to tuberculosis at the Granard Middle School in Gaffney, S.C. The news came three days after the school revealed one student had tested positive for hepatitis C after accidentally pricking her finger on a hypodermic syringe she found in a classroom. Officials believe the TB cases are part of the same outbreak that left 38 infected in December after a custodian developed the disease. None of the students has developed active TB, according to Department of Health and Environmental Control spokesperson Thom Berry.
