Number of AIDS Victims Doubles in India

HIV cases increased in India by 2.8 percent to 3.97 million last year, according to government figures cited by Minister of State for Health A. Raja during Wednesday's parliamentary session. He told parliament that the figure stood at 3.86 million in the year 2000. Some 765 people died of AIDS last year, compared to 378 in 2000, Raja said. But observers said the real numbers of AIDS deaths and HIV cases are much higher since government figures are based on cases registered with the official National AIDS Control Organization, and a large number of cases go unreported.Adapted from:
