South Carolina: Department of Health and Environmental Control Report Shows Minority Health Progress

April 29, 2002

Progress has been made, but minorities in South Carolina are still more likely to have health problems than the state's white citizens. The new report, "Healthy People Living in Healthy Communities," was issued by state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and distributed Friday at the annual meeting of the South Carolina Medical Association. Among other findings, the report said blacks are more than nine times as likely as whites to have HIV/AIDS. DHEC Commissioner C. Earl Hunter said work still needs to be done in combating obesity, HIV/AIDS and cardiovascular disease.
