$240,000 Grant for University of California-Irvine Chemist

April 3, 2002

Grew Weiss, a chemist at the University of California-Irvine, has received $240,000 to study proteins, particularly those in HIV. Weiss, 31, received the money from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation of Irvine as part of the Beckman Young Investigator Award program. The foundation each year gives sizable grants to young, tenure-track researchers whose work shows special promise. The foundation made 16 awards this year. Weiss studies both proteins and enzymes -- work aimed at developing drugs to combat HIV and cancer.
