Nigeria Releases Fund to Fight AIDS

April 3, 2002

The Nigerian government has released 500 million naira (about $4.5 million) to purchase drugs in its fight against AIDS, the News Agency of Nigeria reported on Wednesday. Minister of State for Health Amina Ndalolo was quoted as saying that 80 percent of the money has been paid to an Indian pharmaceutical company for a supply of antiretroviral drugs. "The drugs are aimed at improving the quality of and prolonging the lives of victims to enable them to contribute their quotas to national development," Ndalolo said. Nigeria's HIV prevalence rate rose rapidly from 1.8 percent in 1993 to 5.8 percent in 2001.
