New HIV cases reported in Lithuania during the first three months of 2002 were mainly spread among injection drug users, reported the Lithuanian AIDS Center. Of the 12 new HIV cases registered in the January-March period, 11 were infected through injection drugs, while one person contracted it through sexual intercourse. Some 72 new HIV cases were reported in 2001, mostly among injection drug users. Lithuania's first HIV case was reported in 1988. A total of 45 people have been diagnosed with AIDS in Lithuania, with 30 already dead (20 from AIDS).
