Venereal Disease Epidemic Sweeps Kazakhstan, TV Reports

August 13, 2001

Kazakh Commercial Television reported on Aug. 9 that Kazakhstan is experiencing dramatic increases in STDs. "Over the past six years, there has been a 320-fold increase in the number of syphilis patients among teenagers and a 250-fold increase among adults," it said. Quoting an official forecast, the report said the rate of STDs is expected to continue growing for at least three years.
