European Union Pledges More Money to Fight AIDS in Poor Countries

August 13, 2002

The European Union's head office, the European Commission, said Friday it would spend an additional EUR22 million ($21.5 million) to fight the spread of AIDS in poor countries. The commission said it would spend the money on funding prevention programs for younger people "who are especially vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection." The commission stated the funds would add to the EUR120 million ($117.2 million) the office pledged last year to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
