News Briefs US Agency to Fund Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS FoundationAugust 1, 2002 The United States Agency for International Development will provide up to $100 million to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation to expand its overseas programs for pregnant women infected with HIV. The foundation supports 231 sites in 17 countries where pregnant women are offered HIV testing and counseling. If infected, they are offered during labor a single dose of nevirapine. Each newborn is given a single dose, as well. The strategy reduces the rate of HIV transmission to as low as 13 percent, according to some studies. The foundation this year is spending about $9 million on programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The $100 million USAID grant will be disbursed over five years and may allow the organization to reach up to 3 million pregnant women.
