Texas: Groundbreaking Slated for Tuberculosis Hospital

August 29, 2002

With tuberculosis still a threat in Texas, dignitaries will break ground today for an $18.8 million TB hospital -- the largest new construction of such a facility in the United States in 50 years, state officials said. The 75-bed facility will be built in south San Antonio at the Texas Department of Health's Texas Center for Infectious Disease. The new facility will replace the State Tuberculosis Hospital, which opened in 1953. The state health agency reported 1,643 cases of TB in 2001, up from 1,506 in 2000.
