AIDS Vaccine Ready by 2010: Kenyan Researchers

August 30, 2001

The Kenyan AIDS Vaccine Initiative (KAVI) said that the much-awaited AIDS vaccine would be ready for use in 2010, according to the East African Standard newspaper. KAVI principal investigator Job Bwayo said that processing and compiling data and laboratory results will take between two and five years after completion of the third phase of the trials in Kenya and Britain. The second phase of the HIV/AIDS vaccine trials is scheduled to start in Kenya next month. Bwayo said that the first phase of the trials has shown that the vaccine is safe and is stimulating the right kind of immune response among volunteers.
