News Briefs Cameroon Lowers Anti-AIDS Drug PricesAugust 5, 2002 The government of west African nation Cameroon on Thursday announced cuts of around 30 percent in the price of AIDS drugs. The monthly cost of antiretroviral drugs has until now varied between $30 and $100. These prices have now been dropped to between roughly $20 and $40 following an instruction from President Paul Biya, said Health Minister Urbain Olanguena. He said the drugs used for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of the disease would continue to be distributed free of charge. Observers said the cost of treatment at the lower rate of $20 per month nevertheless remained relatively high in a country where the minimum monthly salary is roughly $30.
