News Briefs Uganda: Refugees to Get Free HIV DrugsDecember 16, 2002 The UN High Commissioner for Refugees will soon start distributing free nevirapine to expectant mothers in refugee camps in Uganda to curb mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. Paul Spiegel, a senior UNHCR technical officer, said last week that UNHCR would also carry out several programs with the government and nongovernmental organizations to sensitize refugees about the dangers of the pandemic. Although most camps have counseling and voluntary testing services, Siegel said, more programs are needed to give refugees equal opportunities.
