News Briefs Congress Votes $6.8 Billion to Support CDC EffortsDecember 21, 2001 Congress approved an appropriation bill of $6.8 billion for the CDC on Thursday, with at least $2.8 billion in funds devoted to security, upgrades and renovations in response to the Sept. 11 attacks. This represents the largest annual budget appropriation in the agency's history, totaling $4.3 billion for fiscal 2002. In addition to renovation funds, the CDC will receive $154.5 million for international HIV/AIDS programs. While President Bush is expected to sign the bill, the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste criticized it as unnecessary "pork."
