Colorado Man Arrested After Refusing TB Care

December 26, 2001

Joe Rivera, 51, was arrested after he flouted a TB quarantine order and refused to go to the hospital for treatment. He was issued the order Dec. 6 while a patient at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Under Colorado law, chief medical health officers can order people who may be infected with TB to undergo treatment and can ask police to issue a warrant if the patients refuse. Officials said they do not know if Rivera has TB but wanted him to come in for precautionary treatment and observation. He was taken into custody Friday night.
