Malian President Honors People Living with HIV

December 28, 2001

During the recent National Order awards ceremony in Mali, President Alpha Omar Konare paid tribute to two AIDS awareness groups for making a significant impact in the fight against AIDS. Medals were given to the Malian Association for Assistance and Support to People Living with HIV and the Women's Association for Assistance and Support to AIDS Widows and Orphans. Konare asked people to "open [their] eyes and be strongly committed to the fight against the AIDS pandemic." In an effort not to shock Muslim clerics who have condemned the use of condoms, the Malian leader said "Fidelity, abstinence, yes; but we cannot remain passive and let our youths die. Let it [the use of condoms] be understood."
