Pope Tells AIDS Victims He Is with Them, Encourages Scientists Fighting for a Cure

December 3, 2001

At Vatican City on Saturday, Pope John Paul II told people with AIDS that he is with them, and he encouraged medical researchers to keep up their efforts to find a cure for the disease. The pontiff marked World AIDS Day by reaching out to people with HIV, saying, "Dear brothers and sisters sick with AIDS, don't feel alone! The pope is near you with love and supports you in your difficult path." At an audience with health care volunteers, John Paul also offered encouragement to scientists "who tirelessly spare no effort to heal and defeat this grave form of illness."
