France Announces Three-Year Plan to Fight "Alarming" AIDS Situation

December 3, 2001

French Health Minister Bernard Kouchner on Wednesday announced a three-year plan to fight AIDS amid signs that French youths and gay men aren't being careful enough about prevention. France will increase distribution of the female condom, said Kouchner, who also urged doctors to increase the number of AIDS tests they provide, especially for pregnant women, women who request abortions and couples planning to marry. Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, according to his spokesperson, said France must also "pursue its efforts of solidarity with developing nations" in the fight against the pandemic.
