Virginia State Health Department Investigates TB Case in Hampton Roads

December 5, 2001

The Virginia Department of Health is investigating a case of infectious TB in a health care worker in Hampton Roads. Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Robert B. Stroube said the risk of contracting TB from the worker is very low. The patient is being treated and is no longer working, according to Dr. Ram Koppaka, director of the agency's Division of Tuberculosis Control, which began investigating the case in early October. Friends, family and coworkers of the patient, whose name and place of employment were not released, have been tested, but no additional TB cases have been discovered.
