Haiti Gets Help in AIDS Fight

December 5, 2001

The Inter-American Development Bank will grant $1 million to Haiti's government to draft a national plan on combating HIV/AIDS in the country, which has the highest infection rate in the Caribbean. About 5 percent of Haiti's 8.2 million residents have HIV. Haiti has received $8 million this year from the international community to fight the disease. Most of the country's programs are devoted to prevention efforts, such as education, testing and condom distribution. There is no distribution of drugs and little care for those already infected, said Dr. Eddy Genece, director of the non-governmental organization Promoters of Zero-Objective in the Spread of AIDS.
