International Red Cross Urges World Not to Ignore "Forgotten" Crises

December 7, 2001

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on Tuesday launched an appeal for $163 million for next year, urging donors to do more for the world's "forgotten" humanitarian crises. "While their attention is rightly focused on Afghanistan, we would still ask donors not to ignore the other crises," said Peter Rees-Gildea, fund-raising chief at the Red Cross federation. "Regions like Africa have been forgotten." The organization's Secretary-General Didier Cherpitel said top priority would go to Africa, with $44 million needed for programs such as health care and support for AIDS patients and their families. "AIDS will kill more people this decade than all the wars and other disasters that have occurred over the past 50 years," said Cherpitel.
