Vatican to Give $475,000 to Uganda's AIDS Orphans

February 12, 2001

The Vatican has announced that it will use a $475,000 donation to help orphans of the AIDS epidemic in Uganda. The donation was made by the city of Milan, Italy, during the Roman Catholic Church's 2000 Holy Year. Archbishop Paul Cordes, the head of Cor Unum, the Vatican's charity coordinating division, noted that as of year-end 1997, approximately 9.5 percent of adults in Uganda were infected with HIV and 1.7 million children had been orphaned by the disease.
