Denver: AIDS Donation Hailed on Webb Mission

February 28, 2002

Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and his wife Wilma on Tuesday presented $5,000 to a Soweto, South Africa, AIDS prevention program. The mayor is heading a Denver trade mission to the African nation, and the money was donated by the Broncos and Rockies and the joint ownership of the Nuggets and the Avalanche. The AIDS Clinic and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital will share the money, which was matched by a $5,000 grant from the Elizabeth Glaser Foundation to buy infant formula to help prevent the spread of HIV from HIV-positive mothers to their babies. Thirty percent of pregnant women in South Africa were HIV-positive last year, compared to 0.8 percent in 1990.
