Alabama: X-Rays Find No Signs of TB in 55 People After Student's Death

February 4, 2002

Chest X-rays found no TB in 55 people who earlier tested positive for exposure to it in Mobile, Ala. More than 600 people at Spring Hill College were tested for TB after Ben Lenjo, 28, a student from Kenya, died of the disease in his dormitory room Dec. 28. Health officials said Thursday the 55 people given X-rays to follow up on positive skin tests showed no signs of full-blown TB but were encouraged to take antibiotics. More than 100 others who tested negative for exposure will be asked to undergo an additional skin test in March. Authorities believe Lenjo contracted TB in Africa while caring for his brother, who had the disease. Joe Jablecki, head of the county Health Department's TB division, said he does not expect anyone else to develop TB.
