Zimbabwe to Distribute Cheap AIDS Drugs

January 30, 2002

The government of Zimbabwe said Tuesday it would start distributing cheap antiretroviral drugs to people infected with AIDS next month as part of efforts to combat the disease. Health officials said the move was in response to the continued rise in HIV infections in the country, where AIDS is killing an estimated 5,000 people every week. Zimbabwe has struck agreements with drug manufacturers in India and other countries to obtain cheap antiretroviral medicines to treat AIDS patients, who are estimated to make up about 25 percent of the adult population in the nation of 12.5 million people.
