Community Resource Update: Spotlight on Entre Hermanos

Entre Hermanos originally was formed 12 years ago by a group of friends from the Latino(a) community who shared common ideas and goals and wanted to create an environment of support and leadership to strengthen the community. After many years of community support and working with the current Board of Directors, Entre Hermanos Organization obtained its 501(c3) status in October of 2001.

The Entre Hermanos Organization's mission is to provide support; develop leadership; strengthen the Latino(a) gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community; and provide a cultural, social, and emotional environment of safe health, creating a model appropriate to the needs of our Latino(a) GLBT community.

Entre Hermanos is currently working on these programs and events:

  • Atrevete: This program provides education and prevention of HIV/AIDS and STD's for men who have sex with men (MSM). Program Manager, Hugo Ovejero, hugo@entrehermanos.org.

  • Las Sinverguenzas: This program was created by women for women to provide support and social activities. Program Coordinator, Emma Moreno, emma@entrehermanos.org.

  • Noche Latina: A social program that is held at Neighbors Club in Capitol Hill every Sunday. This program/event was created to bring together our Latino(a) community in general. Coordinator, Sergio Miranda, sergio@entrehermanos.org.

  • Creando Familia: A scholarship fund created to support Latino(a) students in conjunction with the Pride Foundation, entrehermanos@entrehermanos.org.

  • First GLBT Latino Cultural Week: Entre Hermanos Agency and Las Sinverguenzas will be organizing this important event to create a cultural space for Latin people in Seattle, sc@entrehermanos.org. Some of these activities are:

    • October 2, 2002, 6:30 pm: Opening Ceremony. LGBT Community Center, 1115 E. Pike St. on Capitol Hill, Special guests. 9:00 pm - 2:00 am Happy hour all night at the Bar Blu, located at E. Pike St. and Harvard Ave.

    • October 3, 2002, 5:30 pm: Workshops. LGBT Community Center, 1115 E. Pike St. on Capitol Hill. "Love Shouldn't Hurt" and "Political Asylum" with a prestigious panel.

    • October 4, 2002, 6:00 pm: Video Night. LGBT Community Center, 1115 E. Pike St. on Capitol Hill, "En Colores." 8:00 pm -- Latina Cabaret. LGBT Community Center, "The women your mother warned you about."

    • October 5, 2002, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm: "Gran Pachanga" (big Party). Volunteers Park, Amphitheatre, Mexican Bingo, High-hills race, Salsa dancing tournament. Mexican Folk Dance. Group "Bailadores de Bronce." Music prizes and much more. Food, tables of information.

    • October 6, 2002: Brunch at Galerias. 611 Broadway E., Special guests. 10:00 pm Closing Ceremony in "Noche Latina" -- Neighbors Dance Club, 1509 Broadway, La Gorda and the fabulous travesty show of Entre Hermanos present: "Culture also gets transformed."
