News Briefs Nigeria to Distribute 1 Billion Condoms to Stem AIDSJanuary 9, 2002 In the capital city Abuja, Nigerian Health Minister Alphonsus Nwosu said the government will distribute 210 million condoms to Nigerians annually over five years, beginning February, in cooperation with the National Union of Nigerian Students. Nwosu said President Olusegun Obasanjo worried that the recent upsurge in HIV/AIDS cases from 5.4 to 5.8 percent showed some of the interventions are not having any effect. The condoms -- financed by the British government -- are a bid to stem the HIV/AIDS scourge in Nigeria.
