Obituary: Peter Uitdenbosch -- Founded AIDS Groups

July 17, 2002

Peter Uitdenbosch, a former Sarasota resident who founded AIDS-Manasota in 1988 and the Florida AIDS Action Council in 1992, died July 6 after an accident at his home. He was 64. Uitdenbosch became an outspoken advocate for people with AIDS after he was diagnosed with HIV in 1986. In an interview he said his illness had taught him compassion and the strength to make people feel good about themselves. After meeting with AIDS patients in jails, public health centers and elsewhere, he said he discovered many who had a disease as deadly as the virus itself: their sense of hopelessness.
