Senate Panel Backs More Global AIDS Funds

July 17, 2002

The Senate Appropriations Foreign Operations Subcommittee passed a $16.35 billion foreign aid bill on Tuesday that provides $110 million more than President Bush sought to fight the global AIDS epidemic. The bill passed included $750 million to try to stem the spread of AIDS. Subcommittee Chair Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said, "A country as wealthy as ours should be providing three to five times that amount to combat what is unquestionably the worst public health crisis in human history." During the 14th International AIDS Conference, the United States was criticized for its global AIDS funding.
