July 18, 2002

Syphilis is up in at least three New Mexico counties, according to a health alert issued jointly by the state Health Department, the Navajo Nation Social Hygiene Department and the Indian Health Service. Authorities have reported 16 cases in Bernalillo County (compared to 11 for all of 2001); seven cases in San Juan County (compared to four in 2001); and four in McKinley County (compared to two in 2001).
