The wives of the leaders of African nations said Thursday that a new organization they have helped create will boost continent-wide cooperation in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the three-day UN-sponsored meeting that is launching the African First Ladies Organization Against HIV/AIDS, Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, wife of Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo, said Ivory Coast was the worst affected West African nation. African first ladies have met regularly in the past 1½ years to plan how to convince their husbands -- and their governments -- of the need to combat HIV's alarming spread throughout the continent. Gbagbo said the new organization would help them better exchange ideas on tackling AIDS.
