Florida Representative Proposes Housing Funds be Used for AIDS DrugsJuly 23, 2002 Rep. Dave Weldon (R-Fla.) offered an amendment to the Housing Affordability for America Act of 2002 to allow states and localities to transfer federal funds provided by the Housing Opportunities for People With AIDS program to meet shortfalls in the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. The National Minority AIDS Council called the plan to allow housing funds to pay for HIV drugs "shortsighted and dangerous" and said it would undermine the ability of governments to provide sufficient affordable housing to poor and low-income people with HIV. The organization said stable housing and support services increase the ability of HIV/AIDS patients to access and comply with treatment.
