San Francisco: Hate Crime Arrest for AIDS Memorial Vandalism

July 24, 2002

Police arrested a man on suspicion of a hate crime for defacing the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. Philip Atkinson, 20, of San Francisco, is being held on suspicion of vandalism with a hate crime enhancement, burglary and possessing stolen property for marking a flagstone, boulders and a bench with anti-gay epithets. Police arrested Atkinson Monday using investigative leads by the department's graffiti coordinator, who recognized the markings from dealing with the suspect on prior arrests. A hate crime enhancement adds an additional one of three years in jail to whatever crime it is attached.
