Almost as Many HIV Cases Registered in Six Months as All of Last Year in Latvia

July 6, 2001

In the first six months of the year, 432 new HIV cases have been registered in Latvia, which is only 34 cases less than were reported all last year, according to Iveta Dievberna of the AIDS Prevention Center. Last year, 466 people were diagnosed with HIV, which was almost twice as many as in 1999, when 241 cases were registered. Compared to the first half of 2000, about 2.5 times more HIV cases have been registered in the first half of this year.
