News Briefs Spain Says It Has the Highest Number of AIDS Cases in EuropeJuly 8, 2002 Spain has 130,000 confirmed AIDS cases -- the highest number in Europe -- despite a decrease in new infections, the government said on Thursday. Last year's figure for new cases, 2,300, was the lowest in a decade, mostly because of reductions in the infection rate among intravenous drug users (IDUs), said Francisco Parras, head of the National AIDS Program. While IDUs tend to submit to testing in Spain, he said, many of the nation's heterosexuals are not practicing safe sex, and homosexuals have become somewhat more lax about prevention. The Spanish figure represents nearly one-quarter of the 550,000 European AIDS cases. Associated Press 07.04.02 This article was provided by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
